KINGSFORD SMITH PARK
As the community divides over the proposed second Sydney airport and the impact of aircraft noise on this World Heritage Area, The Altitude Project looked to the skies and drew on the community's past relationship with the celebrity aviators of the early 20th Century, and the public parks dedicated them, to hold multi-artform events in Kingsford Smith & Melrose Parks: Altitude - The Aviators.
Altitude - The Aviators
Kingsford Smith Park, Katoomba from 4pm to 9.30 pm on Saturday 17th February 2018.
"Altitude -The Aviators" took off with internationally acclaimed contemporary artists presenting sound and interactive installation art in Kingsford Smith Memorial Park. Following a talk by local historical guide Paul Innes, at the historic Metropole Guesthouse overlooking the park, audience members joined a séance performance calling on the spirit of celebrity aviator Amy Johnson with artist Jacquelene Drinkall. They were invited to become students at "Amy Johnsons Flight School" in a work by Rachel Peachey and Paul Mosig, using sensors and real-time processing to explore Kingsford Smith Park through manipulated reality. An interactive 4 channel sound-installation, celebrating Johnson’s life, "8662", by artists Solange Kershaw and Damian Castaldi, was installed on the path leading down to the park. After dark, there was a laser work, "Tides of Entropy", by Brad Allen-Waters, a networked LED light installation, "Beacons Hither and Nigh", by Michael Petchkovsky and three newly composed works were performed live in the historic sound shell: "On A Wing" and "Orographic Lift", by sound artist Gail Priest and "The Carrington Event" by Chris Caines. In addition there was a sound performance by local musician Broken Chip and an installation at The Metropole Hotel, "Circa", by our emerging artist-in-residence, David Brazil.
